Creating a Community of Practice

A community of practice is a group of individuals who interact over time and are bound together by a shared interest or purpose. The IBP Knowledge Gateway supports hundreds of virtual CoPs and numerous eForums on a variety of global health topics.

Before creating your own CoP, consider the following issues:

  • What are you hoping to achieve in your community?
  • What are your long-term goals for the community?
  • Does a CoP already exist on the Knowledge Gateway that shares this goal? Browse existing communities here. If a community with a similar goal already exists, join the community and contact the community leader for more information about the community.

  • Who will lead your community?
  • This person will foster learning, stimulate interaction in the community, and manage community logistics including approving new members and moderating member contributions.

  • When would you like to launch your community?
  • Who is your audience? Do you have access to them? Do you know if they will be comfortable using a virtual CoP to exchange information?

  • What strategies will you employ to capture your target audience? What strategies will you employ to achieve your goals?

  • Will sensitive information be shared? What level of security is necessary for your CoP?

  • How will conversations in the community start? Will conversations be moderated by the community leader?

Once you have considered these issues, you are ready to create a community of the Knowledge Gateway. To create your community, log into the Knowledge Gateway, click “Add Community,” and fill out the form.
